Florida's Turnpike Enterprise - Mobile LiDAR

Description

Earth Eye was contracted to collect mobile LiDAR for Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) to support a road resurfacing project. The data was used to create engineering-grade DTMs for Engineering design over a period of 3 weeks.

The MAC vehicle was used to scan all through-lanes, entrance and exit ramps using a mobile LiDAR system equipped with a Riegl VMX250 circular scanner. The LiDAR sensor used generated a point cloud at a frequency of 600,000 points per second and provided a relative accuracy of 5mm.

The collected data was post-processed and controlled with a base station in the center of the project and then each drive-line was calibrated against one another to create a virtual road surface. Then, the surface was compared to local ground control along the route and certified to an absolute accuracy of 0.05 feet vertically.

The resulting data set was used to create engineering plans to support resurfacing activities and to modify existing grade and cross-slope to support increased safety and capacity enhancements. The final data set was certified by a Professionally Licensed Surveyor (PLS) to an accuracy of 0.05 feet vertically.
