How to Apply

Staffing Philosophy

We are a tight-knit team, so when it comes time to add staff, it's critical that we hire well. Developing software and delivering products with people is something like a Vulcan Mind-Meld (yeah we're a little geeky) so we've put together this list to help you get an idea about how we work before applying.

No Heroes. No Goats.

We are a team. Teams succeed or fail together. As such, we believe that everyone on the team is critical to our collective success. When things go well, we celebrate as a team, but when there are problems, everyone digs in to help.

Professionalism & the "No Assholes Rule"

We may as well be upfront about this. We are professionals. We respect the work we do, and the people we work with. We work very closely - pair programming is a regular occurance - and the last thing we need to deal with is someone who is poisoning the work environment by having a bad attitude, getting down on co-workers, or has bad personal hygeine habits. We reject anti-social behavior as it wastes the entire team's time. (for more info check out this book at Amazon)

Universal Respect

Egos must be checked at the door and respect must be universal. Everyone has great ideas regardless of their title, and we encourage open communication that helps drive our projects to the best possible solution.

Effectiveness over Effort

While we commend people who put in a lot of time (it's not an expectation though), we are really interested in people who are effective - who get the right things done at the right time. People who know what needs to be done well now, and what can be optimized as needed later.

Use Good Tools

We custom build our workstations to make sure we get the most bang for our buck. We believe there is no reason to nickle and dime on hardware or software for developers so we don't (Hint: you will have at least 3 screens). If you want it, and it will help you be more productive, you'll get it.

No Coasting

We have high expectations - essentially we want everyone to be an expert. Regardless of where you may be now, after a year with our team you'll be an expert in something. Of course we'll help you along the way, but this is not an environment for those looking to coast.

Social Reputation Counts

People are social animals, and so we encourage everyone to participate in the larger conversation via Twitter, blogging LinkedIn, Yelp, video casting, or speaking. In this day and age, your on-line reputation preceeds you. We'll be Googling every applicant to see how much you participate, and what your reputation is like. Be up-front and send us links to your web presence.

Fire Well.

Although we do our best to hire well, it's worth noting that we also believe in firing well. We will not tolerate slackers or people who just don't 'gel' with the team. While we like people to "participate" on social networks, 300 tweets a day will have you looking for another job.

Have Fun

Many groups put this on their list of "important" stuff, but few carry through on making this a day-to-day reality. Sure, development is not always a bed of roses, and clients can sometimes be a pain, but overall, everyone on our team really enjoys coming to work every day, and we think you will too.
