Positive Train Control LiDAR Collection

Description

Earth Eye collected a 30 mile section of CSX rail lines in Virginia to augment previously collected airborne LiDAR data. The mobile data was proven to have more fidelity than the airborne LiDAR and could provide a more complete coverage for CSX.

Earth Eye outfitted a Hi-Rail vehicle with forward looking imagery, LiDAR and inertial navigation to collect a 30-mile section of rail for CSX. The data was used to create GIS data that will support the Positive Train Control (PTC) compliance as required by the NTSB. CSX is using this technology to augment previously collected airborne LiDAR data that contains significant gaps due to overhead obstructions such as bridges and trees.
